Tahquitz peak. 6 mile hike with 2300 feet of vertical gain from the parking location. The peak sits at 8825ft above sea level. We were easily able to make multiple contacts after setting up along a ridge past the fire lookout station. We found a nice spot under a big pine, got the wire in the air with our pole-fishing-pole and were off making contacts. This was one of our first times attempting to make SOTA contacts on 5 watts with the unmodified 817. It wasn’t easy. Consequently, the 817 has received ALL of W4RTs (http://www.w4rt.com) mods and our subsequent tests have been much more successful. I highly recommend getting the mods if you have an 817 and plan to work SSB.
